Double-barrelled attack on opening day

Seamus looks for a flying start to the new jumps season at Kempton today, with Meldrum Lad going for the four-timer and Bletchley Castle trying a new trip.

Both look to have solid chances, and Seamus said:”The pair are much-improved these past few months. Bletchley Castle is now 20lb higher than when narrowly beaten at Doncaster early in March, having since won at Fontwell and finished second at Chepstow.

“He lost nothing in defeat at Chepstow, where he was worn down close home, and the handicapper actually reckons it was a career-best performance as he put him up another 4lb, so, though we are going up in trip, he does settle in front and I’d be hopeful he’d get the extra distance.

“The wind operation has made all the difference to Meldrum Lad, who won three in three weeks during April. He travels so well in his races and going right-handed seems to suit him, so, hopefully, he can take this step up in grade in his stride, even with the 5lb penalty.”
